Picking the right rod is both scary and exciting. Get it wrong, and it’s not exactly something you can always return. Get it right, and it can be the absolute game-changer that suits your style of fishing, brings comfort and joy to your excursions, or maybe steps you up a level to target and land better-class fish.

To be honest, there are so many facets of fishing, each requiring a very specific approach in terms of tackle and skill, all of which the fishing rod plays an obvious integral role in your choice of equipment.

There are many ways to pick a rod, and we could carry on for hours discussing the in-depth details of what defines the perfect rod, but over the years, we have developed a recipe to narrow it down to make sure that you walk out of the shop with the best rod for your style of fishing.

In a world of guiding, I have had the privilege of testing, feeling and fishing some top-tier equipment and the one thing I have noticed above and beyond anything else is that the best rods are not always defined by a hefty price tag.

Simply said, expensive rods are not always the best; there is so much more that needs to be considered when picking the right rod for you!

So, How Do I Pick the Perfect Rod for Me?

We tend to walk into tackle shops and, firstly, what meets the eye often defines the way we shop. And right there, 90% of inexperienced anglers tend to make their biggest mistake and walk out of the shop with the completely wrong rod.

Facebook is flooded with second-hand sales with captions like “only been used once, in excellent condition,” or “looking to upgrade to a newer model, only been used once.”

Yip, some of those second-hand sales are definitely driven by incorrect purchases. It happens, and if it’s happened to you, you’re not alone; we’ve all done it, so fear not.

Be Discerning of Bells and Whistles

FG Tackle promises to deliver expert advice, it’s advice driven by anglers for anglers, and we know all too well how tackle manufacturing companies push their products with all the promises of bells and whistles that have transformed a piece of carbon with guides and gimble to a magic wand. If you swing it and scream “vrystaat!” fish magically tend to appear.

They’ve changed fishing rods into a fashion statement, and even though we’re all for it, we all fall for it. There are blue ones, green ones, red ones, orange ones, grey ones, gold ones, pink ones, silver ones, black ones and here’s the scary part, many an angler has bought after the colour and not the rod…

The good news is, regardless of colour, rod tech is certainly sitting at an all-time high, especially with the introduction of Nano Carbon technology. But before we don our thick goggles and start discussing molecular science, let’s hook you up with the “how to” to help you pick the perfect rod!

The best way to go about this entire process is to do it in reverse. Forget the rod and start with the fish. It’s as easy as that.

Be a Fish-Forward Rod Purchaser

Years ago, I was faced with a bit of a dilemma. I really loved hunting kob and I always picked stiffer action rods to assist with sending bigger baits to back banks, or to have that pulling power to deal with all the hounds, spotties and bags between.

I mean, I caught a lot of fish on that stiff action rod, but when it came to big kob, even smaller shoaling kob, I realised that I was missing a lot of bites and because I was fishing on braid, that stiffer action rod was making me lose a lot of fish too, especially once I switched over to braid. I even experienced some of my favourite hooks breaking. Something felt off.

My error was picking a rod that I wanted, a rod that assisted my idea of what is required, instead of focusing on what the fish I loved so much was calling for. I was wrong, and a fish proved it so.

And so I shifted my mindset to become acutely aware of a Dusky Kobs feeding behaviour. Using circle hooks and big baits like large mullet or octopus required a slow and sensitive feed on behalf of the angler.

The rod allows the fish to feed uninterrupted, the circle hook benefiting from the softer action to seat better during a bite and in the fight, those head shakes being perfectly absorbed by the soft action, keeping the hook in place no matter how violent those shakes became. My catch records improved instantly and ever since, I have adapted this mentality when choosing a rod for a specific species.

Work Your Way Back from the Fish to the Rod

Another species that taught me much about choosing the right rod is Galjoen. Here, the narrative changed slightly, but in theory it remained the same.

Due to our rocky coastline and the areas where these fish feed prolifically during tidal changes, I was faced with many literal obstacles to fish through or over. My subject species was small, my hooks were small, and the fish, relative to its size, could box really well in an environment it knew so well. Getting clipped or reefed by large specimens was quite common. I had no issue hooking them, but the fight became an issue. I had a 12ft and a 13ft rod, and even though I landed my fair share of Galjoen, I simply felt I could do better.

Buy Larger Rods for Larger Species

My hurdle was the environment these fish were feeding in. It was relative to the stretch of coast I was fishing. Shorter rods got me into a lot of trouble on some outsized specimens. I needed line clearance to fish over and through areas that seemed tough on the smaller rods. I still needed a sensitive rod to feel those bites, but something whippy to push small baits far and so I took my first leap to a 3-5oz 14ft rod.

Instant success, landing 50cm fish became easier, casting towards and over hairy structure became the norm and landing bycatch like the powerful Mussel Cracker became possible.

Sure, we did it all on those smaller rods, but we definitely do it better on the 14ft rods. Even though there are the gulley hunters who hunt these fish on 9ft rods, such a rod would be of specific use only and you’d be really tied to specific zones, whereas a 14ft rod opens up this entire coast as your Galjoen play park.

White Steebras

And then White Steenbras. Even though I may quite possibly be the worst White Steenbras fisherman in the country, I have definitely learned a lesson there, too. I was utterly convinced that a soft action parabolic bend would compensate for the lack of stretch in braid, and I’d be fooling these fish without a problem. Not so.

I know a group of anglers who absolutely hammer these fish, and they all fish with 5 rods that are considerably stiffer than the rods I would think are necessary.

The secret is thin nylon and multipliers. These guys are punting 6oz grapnel sinkers at back banks that I’m not even looking at. When fishing for Steenies, 90% of the time, it’s required to place your rod in a pylon pipe. Wave action breaking onto the braid causes a hard whip on the rod; this motion translates directly to the bait, causing an unnatural presentation.

Nylon, however, has infinitely more stretch and absorbs rod whip and shock, presenting a bait at the end of a line so much better. It’s a much softer presentation. When a Steenie picks up that bait, it’s also less likely to drop it due to the stretch in the line. But you also needed to access that fish on a back bank where it was feeding, and for that you needed that stiffer action rod to push that 6oz.

Estuaries

Moving over to estuaries, finding the perfect bait rod for grunters was shown to me by AJ De Beer. He used a modified fly rod, cheap as chips, and my word, was the leap giant.

We weren’t going ultra-light and super sensitive; these rods were entry-level fly rods, actually finding a slightly heavier rod advantageous in windy conditions. We’d dip down to 10, 8 or even 6lb braid and use nothing but a small swivel as weight. These fish demand weightless fishing on the mud or sand flats and in shallow channels.

Presenting a bait to them would require some distance. When casting a weightless prawn, a stiff action rod simply can’t do it; they simply tear off the hook when casting at speed.

And then there is the bite and hook up, holy moly, a fly rod gets that job done extremely well. And the fight is so cool as these fish power off, straightening that fly rod. You can fish with supremely light leaders to fool these fish because a fly rod compensates for any head shakes or fast, unexpected runs that may part a leader or light braid.

Kob

Spinning for kob, I liked a punchy, stiff action rod to maximise my casting distance and react to bites faster, until Mike Dames pointed out to me that a softer action rod casts a paddletail further.

Subsequently, I started loving bucktail jigs and realised a softer action rod definitely presents these lures better. Again, the process of buying a rod starts in reverse. Fish, lure, then rod that suits the needs of the aforementioned.

I could speak of Giant Trevally, Yellowtail, Garrick, King Mackerel, and many other favorited gamefish species; again, we’d be talking about starting that process in reverse.

Work your way back from the fish to the rod, and you’d be sure to make the right choice. While this may seem fairly obvious to some, a lot of up-and-coming anglers are unaware of what it really takes to purchase the correct gear. Even the experts get it wrong from time to time.

Decide Using the Variables You Must Account For

When we spoke about a rod for a kob, we addressed the feeding behaviour of the animal.

When we spoke about Galjoen, we addressed the environment of the animal.

When we spoke about Steenbras, we addressed the mechanics of what the fish requires according to feeding behaviour and position. (Nylon)

When we discussed Spotted grunter, we discussed casting distance and the presentation of a tricky bait.

When we discussed spinning for kob, we discussed the mechanism of lure action and casting distance.

These are all variables to take into account when purchasing the right rod and there are many more. So many anglers have bought a rod because it’s a “good” rod. Yes, it’s a good rod, but for what, where and when is another question.

I sincerely hope this article has given you insight to give your next rod purchase some thought. A great fishing rod is something so awesome to own, and they aren’t exactly getting cheaper by the day. This is merely a thinking exercise to make you more aware of the variables and dynamics that should be considered when purchasing your next favourite rod.

Tight lines !!

The Cape Yellowtail (Seriola lalandi), known locally as the Geelstert, is arguably Cape Town’s strongest pound-for-pound fighting fish.

These green-backed torpedoes are basically pure muscle. Whether they are boiling on the surface or making you work for a pull, they remain the ultimate prize. If you want to pull tail instead of just burning petrol, you need to understand their distribution, movements and seasons.

In the summer months, we tend to look for them around Cape Point, False Bay, and the Overberg. In the winter months, they frequent the West Coast fisheries like Dassen Island, Lamberts Bay and St. Helena Bay. But keep an eye out, these fish have a tendency to break the rules and can pop up anywhere at any given time, regardless of seasons.

When to Go Yellowtail Fishing: Seasons and Environmental Signs

Success at Cape Point and within False Bay isn’t just luck; it’s about either being well-connected with reports or being able to read conditions and charts – and it’s in your best interest to focus on the latter.

While yellowtail can be found year-round, the primary season runs from November through May. To find them, look for these three critical indicators:

Wind Patterns:

The South-Easterly is the engine. We want a few days of a strong SE wind to cause upwelling, followed by a South-Westerly push. This SW wind is the “magic hand” that moves the warmer, clean blue oceanic water back against the shore.

Although the South Easter may crush temperatures on the Western seaboard, it has a tendency to hold temperatures in the bay itself. Wind driven currents shift warmer water out the points at Hangklip and Cape Point.

When these warmer patches of water meet the cooler waters the magic starts to happen. Throw a bit of SW into the mix to straighten things out and to clean it up and we’re on !

Water Conditions:

Yellowtail are visual hunters. Try and find 17°C or higher and look for light-blue or greenish-blue water. They can be caught in water as cold as 14deg with some larger fish known to eat in water down to 12 deg, so it’s not all lost if you arrive at some icy temps, but they will make you work for it. Water clarity is vital for the fish to spot your lure.

If the water is brown or “ginger,” the fish might be there, but they’ll rarely feed on top. You may even see shoals sporadically feeding on the surface but when casting lures at them, they struggle to eat.

Look for a thermocline on your fish finder. Often, a bottom layer of cleaner water might be sitting below that ginger water, a patch that can be worked with vertical jigs or bait.

Natural Signs:

Watch the “sterretjies.” When these terns are dipping on the surface and skimming bait, it means yellowtail have pushed small bait balls to the surface. It’s not all about Sterretjies, though, so many anglers ignore the gulls and shearwaters.

Different species of sea-dwelling birds also follow the shoals from above. If you see birds like gulls, gannets or shearwaters turning over a patch, give it a try, you might be surprised as to what they are hovering over.

Floating tangled patches of uprooted kelp can also hold the odd yellowtail as it creates a little haven for baitfish to take refuge under. Casting along the edges of these flotillas of kelp can often produce a bonus fish.

Then, there are pressure edges: A fancy term that has confused many an angler.

Imagine placing a big rock in a stream. The water will bulge against the rock on the side that the stream is flowing, that’s the pressure edge of the structure. The upcurrent side of the structure (pressure edge) often holds the goods like bait fish or crustaceans that yellowtail are feeding on.

(Yes, crustaceans. Feeding on shrimp is a thing and while they are sometimes dubbed with lock jaw, it’s merely them feeding on tiny shrimp.) The same can be said for currents in the deep, where stronger current lines meet slacker water. Baitfish often hold close to these current lines.

Temperature gradients can also narrow down your search so keep an eye on your temperature readings when you catch your first fish of the day to start building a pattern.

Yellowtail Hotspots in the Cape

Cape Town anglers are blessed with world-class grounds. Here’s where we usually find the schools:

False Bay / Cape Point:

This is the heart of the action. Key spots include Buffels Bay, Anvil Rock, SW Reefs, Rocky Bank, Seal Island, and the legendary Bellows Rock.

Inside the Bay:

When the fish move deeper into False Bay, look at Whittal Rock, Seal Island, East and York Shoal, Gordon’s Bay reefs, even St. James, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simonstown.

West Coast:

Robben Island and Dassen Island are consistent producers on the Atlantic side, balancing out the Cape fishery well with better showings during the winter and spring months. More often than not having great showings in July and August. Lamberts Bay and St.Helena bay also have some outstanding catches at times.

Overberg:

Struisbaai, being the Mecca of all the yellowtail grounds in South Africa, is not the only spot where these fish can be found in the Overberg. Quoin Point, Pearly Beach, Gansbaai, Betty’s Bay, Hangklip and Rooi Els all have their spells; they can be trickier to fish for, as most of the time fish appearing in these zones are sporadically feeding as they are transitioning between major feeding areas.

Tackle Recommendations

Landing these powerful fish requires gear that will handle repetitive stress and pressure. There is gear that will last a season, and then there is gear that will last you a few seasons.

When fishing for gamefish, smooth, powerful drag systems, high-quality materials and reliability are what you want to focus on.

Here’s a list of trusted gear that is readily bought by our customers. All gear has been trialled and tested on yellowtail.

Mastering the Technique: Trolling, Spinning, and Baiting

Depending on the day, the fish might be “on the bite” or acting shy, and if there is a fish in this ocean that will drive you mad with lockjaw, it’s our beloved Geelstert.

You need to be ready to switch methods to try to crack that daily code. The die-hard spin fisherman will blank without batting an eyelid as they know all too well, when yellowtail shut down they emphasise the meaning of lock jaw.

It’s better to light the fire a little earlier and sink a few cold ones with family and friends.

Trolling

Trolling is an easy way of finding fish. A good trolling speed for yellowtail is around 5.5-6.5 knots SOG. If fish are in a frenzy, you can push it up to 7 knots, even pushing higher when fishing with skirts and feathers. While some Rapalas might be effective at 6.5 knots, smaller lipped lures might find their sweet spot at lower speeds, so pay close attention to how your spread is tracking at speed.

Sometimes you can tune a lipped lure with pliers by bending the eye in the opposite direction that its fading towards.

Your spread can greatly determine your success. Play around until you find something that works for you and runs true according to your boat. We recommend running two to four rods.

Two rods, one long shallow and one short deep. 4 rods. Left long shallow runner, left mid deep runner, right short deep runner, right short shallow. It’s easy to turn with your spread in this order if fish rise in close quarters preventing a spectacular tangle.

Adjust your spread and lures as the fish reveal their biting trend and preference for lures.

Spinning

Land Based

Undoubtedly, the most fun way of catching yellowtail is to actively spin for them from shore. Seeing those green backs pile up behind your plug or lure and then watching that white mouth inhale its prey and turn to give a stellar fight, it’s the ultimate shore-based gamefish in the Western Cape, apart from the unicorn Yellowfin that rarely makes an appearance.

With this comes a naturally protected fishery fiercely enforced by locals. There are local diehards in this game that either fish from shore or from ski boats, both of whom become besotted with the sport, defending their secrets with tooth and nail.

More protected than National State secrets are the zones and ledges that these anglers fish from, and if you are fortunate enough to enter that bubble, respect the hard yards that others have poured blood, sweat and tears into to pave a path of knowledge that many new generation anglers so effortlessly walk and thrive on.

The tackle you require for spinning from shore largely depends on the size of the fish you are targeting.

False Bay fish are generally smaller in size, rarely pushing the 10kg mark. The general rule of thumb is PE3 in the False Bay region. The higher up the coast you move, the greater the demand for PE6/8/10 becomes.

Sure, you’ll land them on lesser gear you will, but when the real ones pull in, you will be destroyed faster than what your feet can keep up with your drag pressure and that on PE10.

11-12ft rods still need some developing in terms of pulling power for these large specimens. However, they serve extremely well for False Bay fish. Up the coast, you can start using popping gear as the ledges are deep and fish move within proximity of the angler.

Offshore: Ski Boat

The Approach Rule: Never drive your boat through the middle of a feeding school. This “spooks” the fish and pushes them down. Instead, circle the edge of the school at a comfortable chasing distance and cast your spoon into the frenzy. Be mindful and respectful of other boats already engaged in a pocket of fish. Casting can, in certain areas, be done on the drift.

Often, those fish are sitting in a zone not quite showing themselves. Dropping your spoon/lure down and varying retrieve rates often raises fish where there were seemingly none. Be active and think outside of the box, which is often defined by chasing other boats and birds.

Jigging

Few anglers realise how deadly jigging can be for Yellowtail. More often than not, fish will sound around mid-morning and sit at a depth of 30-40m only to rise mid-afternoon again.

This is a great time to take out your jigs and work the patches that you marked. If you can get one to feed at depth, you’re likely to send a few more into a frenzy. Jigging on feeding fish can be extremely fun, and full-house hook-ups are quite common.

5-6ft 200-300gr light jigging setups can comfortably handle fish up to 15 kg. Modern technology is incredible on these pencil-thin rods! These fish prefer high-speed jigs and are more likely to bite lures that they need to give chase to. Pink, black/grey over silver, blues, greens and silver are all favourite colours.

Baiting

If the fish are holding deep or shy on the lures, the use of bait can be a blank-buster. Use an 8/0 – 10/0 hook with pilchard, pike, fresh Chokka or the gold standard: fresh octopus. Live Mackeral and maasbanker can do the trick on bigger specimens too.

Tip: Chokka can be freshly caught and is obviously a great bait for Yellowtail. Pick up some squid jigs from FG Tackle and catch your own fresh chokka. Nothing beats live or fresh bait when the Yellowtail are being fussy. Keep your drag tight; these fish will try to stitch you into structure the moment they feel the hook.

Rules of the Water: Limits and Conservation

Our Yellowtail stocks are healthy, currently listed as SASSI Green and a species of Least Concern, but they need our respect to stay that way.

Bag Limit: Recreational permit holders are limited to 10 Yellowtail per person per day. Limit your catch, don’t catch your limit.

Size Limit: While there is no legal minimum size (as per ORI), we recommend letting the smaller juveniles grow to ensure the future of the fishery.

Permits: Always carry your recreational sea fishing permit. If you decide to head inland for species like the indigenous Clanwilliam Yellowfish, remember that a CapeNature freshwater angling license is a legal requirement for anyone over six.

Cooking Your Yellowtail

Yellowtail is a local culinary legend. It’s a clean-tasting fish that is highly sought after, whether served raw, cured or cooked. For the true Cape experience, it belongs on a braai with a bit of apricot jam and garlic butter, while some may pickle it or turn it into a delicious curry.

It tends to dry out quite quickly on the braai, so don’t be scared to take it off earlier than expected. Get your gang to line up, plates in hand, and serve the first plate from the tail side, working your way to the thicker fillets for the final servings.

It’s also a staple in the best local seafood restaurants for a reason—it’s versatile, firm, and delicious.

Dry-aged Yellowtail is also an established trend!

Look for galjoen in foamy white water created by winter winds. Target scoured holes and reef edges where black mussels have washed out (these are usually active feeding zones.)

Rocky reefs with mixed sand and rock provide ideal habitat. Galjoen like areas with good kelp cover and access to their primary food sources. When casting from the beach, watch for exposed gullies after big swells.

Where to Find Galjoen

There are usually two parts to a Galjoen season. The first half of the season the seas are generally more stable, water temperatures are warmer and water tends to be a little cleaner.

And the other half the season the surf zone becomes a world of chaos as our coast is hammered by large storms moving in from the South. In the Summer and Autumn you will have bouts of churned up seas that favour the preferred feeding conditions for Galjoen, but you should also prepare to fish for them with a fairly different mindset until those classic big winter seas pull in.

Very few people know that a substantial portion of our Galjoen stock holds far offshore during the warmer months. The outer reefs of Skipskop, the 5 mile and 12 mile of Struis can host these fish in their thousands and often spear fisherman encounter these spectacular shoals during summer dives.

The inshore fish will more often than not be tightly hugged on rocky coastlines where food is in greater abundance. Their slim bodies may suggest that their feeding is somewhat suppressed during the summer months.

So our tip is to go look for them along rocky shores where wave action dislodges or reveals their preferred baits. Early mornings and late afternoons are best in these fair weather conditions and fish are undeniably drawn to working whitewater zones.

Pushing tide on the spring can yield great results as fish push in to feed on withered, exposed or detached baits. Your best bites often happen on a rock that you are about to be washed off of, so please be careful when fishing against a rising tide and know your exits well.

Generally speaking, during the summer months the South Easterly has silted up most of the reefs along sandy shores where Galjoen tend to thrive during our winter months. As the season turns and our Cape winter begins to bare its teeth, large swells pound our coast, washing away the summer layers of sand that have been covering hidden reefs for months on end.

These hidden reefs are unveiled by these stormy sea’s, revealing with it all that a Galjoens diet consists of. It’s like a winter market, just for Galjoen. Soft shelled redbait or Sand Aas pods have been buried for months, some have died and host cured bait that Galjoen simply can’t resist. Crustaceans, Purple bait, mussels and various worms species are exposed with large swells hammering the coast and this is when the magic migration starts to happen.

Galjoen make their way into the rock and surf zones in numbers. Imagine the underwater scent of metric tonnes of rotting redbait rolling around in the surf? The offshore fish are drawn inshore to indulge in the amassed bait which starts accumulating or become exposed during these winter storms.

The attentive angler will feel the arrival of these offshore shoals as they migrate inshore into sandy coastal areas to feed on newly opened reefs. The reefs are washed open or “oop gespoel” and can at times be visible from shore.

You will identify these zones by looking for tufts of sand puffing up, swirling or turbulent water as swells roll over broken structure or even a deep waveless gutter on a surf. Attempt to fish as close as possible to these bait factories.

Be the first angler on one of these newly revealed sections of reef and you might be rewarded with significant success. The rocky areas will still hold great fish as redbait and black mussels are dislodged by stormy sea’s, but fish may tend to hold in specific areas and be less widespread.

Best Baits for Galjoen

Bait choice can make or break your session.

Remember the two parts of the season we discussed ? Let’s go back to that for a second.

A galjoen rarely if ever rejects quality White Mussel or Red Bait, as long as you have those two baits you should be able to find them. But summer/Autumn fish can have a slightly different taste for Red Bait and their diets are slightly different to the mid winter monsters we love so much.

Warmer cleaner waters means these fish may have been zoned in to certain baits, feeding more on sight than scent. Black mussel and Red Crab can be lethal baits during early season sessions. Large galjoen are often zoned in on large red crabs during summer months and when fishing crab baits, there’s always the chance of the ever present White Musselcracker or even White Steenbras.

Crabs are best fished when collected directly off the rocks and straight onto the hook instead of frozen or pre caught. Don’t be scared to cut them up and try your own Frankenstein versions, you’d be amazed at how well that works.

Curing redbait for this time of year can be done but keep in mind, there is no need to over do it. Fresh redbait can work a charm especially if it’s “Sand Aas” and when curing, a day or two at most should do the trick. Soft to touch, slight discolouration, fruity tone. March, April and May these fish have no problem eating fresh bait and over the years we have even found them in certain areas to prefer the fresher stuff.

White mussel is also a firm favourite along the Overberg coast. And worms, well worms are worms and when they are fresh they rarely lose their mojo.

As soon as the storms start pounding our coast, visibility drops, water temperatures drop, oxygen increases and that’s when you want to focus on prepping your cured red bait. Imagine trying to find a rugby ball in a heavy dust storm. Blinded by the chaos, you’d probably have a much better chance of finding it if it was a well scented redbait ball. You get the point…

Other baits include Sand Prawn, Blood Worm, Moonshine worm, Wonderworm, Purple bait, Sand Crab, Crayfish tail, Oysters and even Pencil bait. And yes there are a few other secret baits…

Essential Fishing Tackle Setup for Galjoen Fishing

The right fishing tackle setup is critical for landing galjoen in rough conditions. Here’s what you’ll need:

Rods

There are anglers who enjoy scratching with 10-13 ft fast-action surf rod, but the Western Cape coastline generally demands a 14ft setup. FG Tackle offers excellent options like the Assassin Bluefish Zero engineered specifically for shore fishing in South Africa’s challenging conditions. Fishing with a 14ft rod radically opens up new zones to fish that 10-13ft setups may struggle to fish over or through.

Line clearance can become extremely important when targeting larger specimens, especially when pulling them from a distance. 10-13ft setups should be considered as close quarter combat tools for scratching gullies and nearby structure. If you have the budget for one rod, try aim for a 14ft rod that can do it all. Summer comes and you have a great rod for Steenbras and kob too !

Reels

Pair your rod with a sturdy spinning reel featuring a strong drag system. Grinder-style reels work well. The PENN Slammer IV[a] and Shimano Saragosa SW A[b] are built for saltwater abuse and have the capacity to handle bigger galjoen and bycatch like Cracker and Steenbras. 6000-8000 spool sizes are best.

Line and Leader

Spool 20-40 lb braided line for sensitivity and strength. We stock JDB 8X DNA braid and many other braids in these ratings. Although braid leaders aren’t always necessary and ca contribute to drag in washy zones, an 80lb braid leader could very well help you land an outsized trophy fish. Our Triple Fish Rhino Braided Surf Leader[c] is designed for exactly this purpose.

Learn to balance your rig with these FG Tackle setup examples.

Light tackle setup

20lb main line
60lb braid leader or straight to .57/.60
.57 / .60 leader
.55-.60 hook snoot
.40 sinker Trace

General Galjoen setup
30lb mainline
80lb braid leader or straight to .60 / .65 mono
.60 – .65 hook snoot
.47 – .50 sinker trace

The “I don’t like to do FG knots” trace setup

Good for targeting large Galjoen around oyster banks and mussel beds with the presence of Musselcracker.

40lb mainline
80lb braid leader or straight to .65 / .70 mono
.65 / .70 hook snoot
.50 / .55 sinker trace

Final tip. When Galjoen are feeding, they are most certainly not line shy. They eat bait off 10 ton boulders, we doubt .70mm of see through mono will deter the bite if the bait is right.

Hooks

Circle hooks have become increasingly popular with Galjoen fisherman. A little secret is to pair circle hooks with a soft action rod and then to simply let them eat, they ultimately hang themselves with minimal persuasion from the angler. This combination has revolutionised the way Galjoen anglers fish. We stock a range of soft action rods specifically suited for edibles.

So what’s our favourite picks ?

1.) BKK Hybrid Heavy Circle SS
2.) Trident Kobu
3.) SSH Hybrid Circle
4.) SSH inline circle
5.) BKK Heavy Glow

Sinkers

Bottle sinkers, wire sinkers, cones and planes, it’s up to the angler here. Naturally bottle sinkers are where it’s at but some anglers swear by fishing a wire sinker on sandy stretches. Each to their own, that’s we stock the full range.

FG Tackle wishes you a happy 2026 Galjoen season !

This guide explores the most important fishing equipment every angler should consider, helping you choose gear that suits your fishing style, location, and target species.

Understanding the Difference Between Saltwater and Freshwater Fishing

Saltwater and freshwater fishing place very different demands on your equipment. Saltwater gear must handle corrosion, strong currents, and larger, more aggressive fish. Freshwater equipment focuses more on sensitivity, accuracy, and lighter setups.

Because many anglers fish in both environments, choosing versatile and reliable equipment becomes essential. FG Tackle offers a wide range of fishing gear suitable for South African conditions, whether you are casting from the rocks, fishing the surf, or spending a quiet day at a local dam.

Fishing Rods for Different Conditions

A fishing rod is one of the most important pieces of equipment in any setup. The right rod improves casting distance, bite detection, and control during the fight.

Saltwater rods are typically stronger and built with durable materials to withstand harsh coastal conditions. These rods are ideal for surf fishing, rock fishing, and offshore applications where power is required to handle heavy sinkers and strong fish.

Freshwater rods, on the other hand, are lighter and more flexible. They allow anglers to feel subtle bites and make accurate casts when targeting species such as bass or yellowfish. FG Tackle stocks rods designed for both environments, giving anglers the ability to match their rod to the type of fishing they enjoy most.

Selecting the correct rod length and action depends on where you fish and what species you target. With the right guidance and equipment, your rod becomes a reliable extension of your technique.

Choosing the Right Fishing Reel

Reels play a crucial role in casting performance, line control, and fighting fish. Matching your reel to your rod ensures balance and smooth operation.

For saltwater fishing, reels must be robust and corrosion resistant. Spinning reels are popular for surf and rock fishing due to their ease of use and strong drag systems. Multiplier reels are often preferred for heavier applications where distance and power are needed.

Freshwater fishing usually requires lighter reels that offer smooth retrieves and accurate control. These reels allow anglers to work lures effectively and respond quickly to strikes.

FG Tackle provides a selection of reels suitable for both saltwater and freshwater fishing, ensuring anglers have reliable performance in every situation.

Fishing Lines and Leaders

The fishing line is the direct connection between the angler and the fish, making it one of the most important components of any setup.

Monofilament lines remain popular due to their versatility and ease of use. They offer stretch, which helps absorb sudden strikes. Braided lines provide superior strength and sensitivity, making them ideal for long-distance casting and deep-water fishing. Fluorocarbon leaders are often used for their low visibility underwater, especially in clear conditions.

In saltwater fishing, leaders and wire traces are particularly important when targeting fish with sharp teeth or rough mouths. Freshwater anglers may use lighter leaders for improved presentation.

FG Tackle stocks a wide variety of lines and leaders to suit different fishing environments, helping anglers adapt their setups for maximum effectiveness.

Lures for Saltwater and Freshwater Fishing

Lures play a key role in attracting fish by imitating natural prey. Choosing the right lure often depends on water conditions, target species, and fishing style.

Saltwater lures are designed to handle stronger currents and aggressive fish. These include soft plastics, metal spoons, and jigs that perform well in coastal environments. Freshwater lures focus more on realism and movement, with options such as crankbaits, soft plastics, and spinner-style lures.

FG Tackle offers lures suitable for land-based saltwater fishing, offshore applications, and freshwater angling. Having a selection of different lures allows anglers to adjust quickly when conditions change.

Terminal Tackle Essentials

Terminal tackle may be small, but it plays a vital role in every fishing setup. Hooks, sinkers, swivels, and clips all contribute to bait presentation and line strength.

Using the correct hook size improves hook-up rates, while the right sinker ensures your bait reaches the desired depth. Swivels help prevent line twist, especially when using lures or fishing in moving water.

FG Tackle provides a wide range of terminal tackle suitable for both saltwater and freshwater fishing, allowing anglers to fine-tune their rigs with confidence.

Fishing Accessories That Improve Your Experience

Fishing accessories make your time on the water more efficient and enjoyable. From tackle storage to tools and bait accessories, these items help keep your gear organised and ready.

Quality accessories also improve safety and comfort during longer fishing sessions. FG Tackle stocks a variety of fishing accessories designed to support anglers before, during, and after every trip.

FG Tackle

Based in Strand, Western Cape, FG Tackle brings over 30 years of fishing experience to the South African angling community. The brand focuses on supplying practical, tested, and reliable fishing equipment suited to local conditions.

Whether shopping online or visiting the store, anglers can find equipment selected with real fishing knowledge behind it. From beginners to experienced anglers, FG Tackle aims to support every fishing journey with trusted gear and expert insight.

Final Overview

Having the right fishing equipment is essential for success in both saltwater and freshwater fishing. The correct combination of rods, reels, lines, lures, and accessories improves not only your chances of catching fish but also your overall enjoyment on the water.

With a wide selection of fishing gear built for South African conditions, FG Tackle continues to be a reliable destination for anglers who want quality equipment that performs when it matters most.

Whether you fish the coastline or inland waters, being properly equipped ensures every fishing trip is one worth remembering.

Freshwater vs Saltwater Fishing — What Every South African Angler Should Know

Whether you are new to fishing or a lifelong angler, understanding the difference between freshwater and saltwater fishing can completely change the way you approach your next trip. The equipment you use, the type of fish you target, and even the techniques you rely on all depend on the kind of water you are fishing in.

At FG Tackle, we know that choosing the right gear starts with understanding where you will be using it. This article explains what sets these two fishing worlds apart and how to prepare for success in each.

Why It’s Important to Know the Difference

Many beginner anglers think that fishing is the same everywhere, but freshwater and saltwater fishing require completely different skills, setups, and strategies. The salinity of the water, the strength of the fish, and even the terrain (dams versus open ocean) all play a role in what gear you will need and how you will fish. Using the wrong tackle in the wrong environment can lead to poor performance or damaged equipment.

That is why knowing the difference is key before you hit the water.

What Is Freshwater Fishing?

Freshwater fishing takes place in non-salty waters like dams, rivers, lakes, and estuaries. In South Africa, popular freshwater spots include Theewaterskloof Dam, Clanwilliam Dam, and the Vaal River.

Common Types of Freshwater Fishing

– Bank or Shore Fishing: Casting from the edge of dams or rivers.
– Boat Fishing: Ideal for reaching deeper or less-accessible spots.
– Fly Fishing: Popular in streams and rivers for species like trout.

Fish You’ll Catch in Freshwater

– Bass – one of South Africa’s most popular sport fish.
– Carp – common in dams and rivers.
– Trout – often found in colder inland waters.
– Tilapia, Catfish, and Kurper – abundant in many freshwater regions.

Best Gear for Freshwater Fishing

– Rods: Lightweight to medium rods for precision casting.
– Reels: Spinning or baitcasting reels designed for lighter lines.
– Line: Monofilament or fluorocarbon – ideal for smooth handling and stealth in clear water.<del>
</del>
At FG Tackle, our freshwater range includes everything from entry-level combos for beginners to high-performance rods and reels for serious dam and river anglers.

What Is Saltwater Fishing?

Saltwater fishing happens in the ocean – along the coastline, in harbours, or out at sea. Saltwater is harsher on gear due to its corrosive nature, and fish are typically larger and stronger, which means you need tougher, more durable equipment.

Types of Saltwater Fishing

1. Coastal (Surf or Rock) Fishing: Casting from the shore, piers, or rocks into the surf zone.
2. Inshore Fishing: Fishing close to the coastline, often from small boats.
3. Offshore / Deep-Sea Fishing: Heading far out to sea in pursuit of large game fish.

Fish You’ll Catch in Saltwater

– Kob (Cob) – a Western Cape favourite.
– Yellowtail – powerful and fast, found near reefs and rocky areas.
– Galjoen, Steenbras, and Garrick – popular surf species.
– Tuna, Dorado, and Marlin – targeted during deep-sea trips.

Best Gear for Saltwater Fishing

– Rods: Medium to heavy rods that can handle big fish and long casts.
– Reels: Salt-resistant spinning or multiplier reels with strong drag systems.
– Line: Braided or heavy monofilament line for maximum strength.
– Bait: Chokka, sardine, mackerel, or specialised saltwater lures such as spoons, plugs, and poppers.

FG Tackle stocks saltwater rods, reels, and accessories built to withstand corrosion and handle the powerful species that thrive in South African waters.

Freshwater vs Saltwater Fishing — The Pros and Cons

Aspect

Freshwater Fishing

Saltwater Fishing

Accessibility

Easier to reach dams, rivers, and lakes; no boat required.

Coastal access is limited to beaches, piers, or boats.

Gear Durability

Lighter and easier to maintain.

Requires corrosion-resistant gear and regular cleaning.

Fish Size

Smaller species, but great for beginners.

Larger, stronger fish that offer more challenge.

Cost

Generally cheaper to start.

Higher costs due to gear and possible boat trips.

Environment

Calm and quiet – perfect for relaxing days.

Exciting, adventurous, and unpredictable.

Why You Need Different Equipment

The main reason you cannot use the same gear for both is corrosion and strength. Saltwater is harsh on metal components, so reels, rods, and even hooks need special coatings or materials. Additionally, ocean fish are stronger and faster, so you need heavier lines and stronger rods.

FG Tackle’s product range is divided into freshwater and saltwater sections, so you can easily find the right gear for your next adventure – all available in-store or through our online fishing tackle shop with delivery anywhere in South Africa.

Pro Tips and Fisherman’s Secrets for Beginners

No matter where you fish – in a dam, estuary, or out at sea – success often comes down to technique, patience, and a few insider tricks that only experience can teach. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind before you cast your first line:

1. Timing is Everything
Fish are most active during early morning and late afternoon. Plan your sessions around sunrise or sunset when the water is cooler and baitfish are moving.

2. Watch the Weather and the Tides
In saltwater fishing, tides affect how and when fish feed – the best times are usually an hour before and after a tide change. In freshwater fishing, overcast days often produce better results than bright, sunny ones.

3. Match the Hatch
This classic fisherman’s phrase means using bait or lures that resemble what fish are naturally feeding on in that area. FG Tackle’s range of locally selected bait and lures are chosen with South African waters in mind, giving you a better chance of a bite.

4. Keep It Simple
Many beginners overcomplicate their setups. Start small – a simple rod, reel, line, and hook combo is all you need to learn the basics of casting and reeling. As your confidence grows, you can upgrade your tackle.

5. Take Care of Your Gear
Especially after saltwater fishing, rinse all rods, reels, and lures in fresh water and dry them properly. Saltwater corrosion is the fastest way to shorten your equipment’s lifespan.

6. Organise Your Tackle
Use a tackle box to separate hooks, sinkers, and lures – it saves time and reduces frustration on the water. FG Tackle offers great storage solutions designed for both beginners and seasoned anglers.

7. Learn Your Local Waters
Ask local fishermen or the FG Tackle team what’s biting, where, and when. Conditions change seasonally, and local insight is often the difference between a great day and a quiet one.

Understanding the difference between freshwater and saltwater fishing helps you fish smarter, protect your gear, and increase your success rate.

Whether you prefer a quiet day at the dam or a full-throttle deep-sea adventure, FG Tackle has the right rods, reels, and bait to match your style.
